Benefits of Joining a Dental Assistant Association

If you are a new graduate of a dental assistant program or school, the next step may be to join a dental assistant association. One example is the American Dental Assistants Association. The ADAA was created more than 80 years ago for the purposes of providing continuing education to dental assistants everywhere. This association encourages assistants to stay up to date on dental technology and further their education in the dental field. Because things are always changing in the fields of medicine and dentistry, assistants must keep their education current and understand state of the art equipment and new techniques.

There is a personal and professional creed required by the ADAA for assistants to take prior to membership, and they are expected to uphold the high quality standards specified. While there are membership dues required to join the ADAA, you will be amazed at all the benefits you get as a member. One thing you get is insurance -- $50,000 in professional liability coverage and $2,000 accidental death and dismemberment insurance. This is comforting to have, even if you don't need it. Insurance coverage is one of those things it's better to have and not need than need and not have.

As a member of American Dental Assistants Association, you also get a free subscription to the Dental Assistant Journal, a periodical that also provides continuing education with a moderate grading charge. If you purchase continuing education home courses from the ADAA, there is no grading fee. There are also leisure programs, automobile programs, restaurant and hotel discounts, and many other perks to membership. You will need to review the various benefits of membership on the website or association literature to be sure of what you are getting.

Not only that, but joining a dental assistant association can help you network with other professionals in your field and even help you find a job. If you are a member of an organization like the ADAA, potential employers will look more favorably on your resume. And, some employers check association directories for people they may want to hire. There is really no downside when it comes to joining an association, except for the membership fees. However when you look at everything you're getting, these fees are quite reasonable.
