What Does Dental Assistant Work Include?

Dental assistants perform a variety of tasks as part of their job. They may take and develop X-rays, take mouth impressions for the purposes of fitting various dental items, help prepare patients for dental surgery, take and monitor vital signs, instruct patients on proper care of their teeth, performing office related duties, and much more. There is never a dull moment because you are always doing something different. Some states regulate what dental assistants are allowed to do on the job, other states let the dentist decide the tasks for the assistant. One way, if you haven't already done so, is to become a nationally licensed certified dental assistant or CDA by taking and passing the national exam. If dental hygienist jobs are calling your name, some employers offer tuition reimbursement and there are night programs for assistants already employed who cannot attend traditional daytime school.
So if you want to do dental assistant work, the first step is to get qualified. Most dental assisting programs at vocational schools and other facilities take around a year or even less to complete. Now you're probably wondering how much you can make as a dentist's assistant. While the figure varies a great deal depending on different factors, the pay rate is approximately $15 per hour on average according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. You can earn higher pay depending on your location, your qualifications and of course by pursuing continuing education in the field.
